Just to let you know - and also put the information some place i won't lose it - that we are just five days away from the annual McGill University booksale. Various folks donate humungous quantities of books they no longer want, and they all go on sale for anywhere from a buck on up.

This is by far the best place to buy cheap used English-language books in Montreal - last year i went with $20 to spend and left with more books than i could carry, including some hard-to-find feminist titles and oversize art books!

The sale is from 9am to 9pm Wednesday October 19th and from 9am to 8pm Thursday October 20th, at Redpath Hall which is a building inside McGill's downtown campus. To get there its best to get yourself to McTavish corner Sherbrooke, walk up McTavish til the first little tunnel to the right, then turn left when you're in front of the McLennan library and walk up to Redpath Hall - the red star on the map i am posting here.

Pro-Choice Activism in Montreal: in english and french

I heard about this anti-abortion conference happening in Montreal in November, and that some people had started a coalition to oppose it. Unfortunately, there has not been a lot of publicity about this, so i asked a friend who was involved in the pro-choice Coalition if they could get me something public to put on he web and forward to sympathetic parties – here is what they sent me in French; the English translation was done by yours truly.

A few weeks ago a number of groups and individuals came together to form a coalition against the « Canadian National Pro-Life Conference 2005 » being held at St-Joseph’s Oratory between November 17th and 19th in Montreal (see http://www.clife.ca/conference_2005/Montrealconf2005.pdf). Bringing together a number of politicians, journalists, academics and of course clergy, this conference situates itself within the rise of the conservative right, and as such will be putting forward an anti-choice, ant-feminist and homophobic agenda.
Our Coalition is putting out a broad call to all organizations and people who refuse to let a small group of reactionary ideologues dictate what women are allowed to do with our bodies, our sexuality, our sexual identity and our health.
If you would like to be a part of our mobilization, to make a statement in support of our Coalition, to provide us with financial assistance, or if you would like more information, we are available to meet with you (at your convenience) or to send us our documentation.

What they mean is: Therapeutic butchery and suffering. Banning euthaniasia.
We Are For Autonomy and Freedom In Regards To :

• Our bodies: we demand free, safe and accessible abortion and contraception, here and elsewhere. Motherhood is a choice!


• Our sexuality: We defend a free and liberatory sexuality, we don’t care if it is homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual…


• Our gender identity: We want the power to define our sex, our gender and uor appearance.


• Our health: We want to learn about our bodies. We want the freedom and knowledge to be able to make informed decisions about our lives and deaths.

Our lives belong to us. This is no priest, politician, doctor, psychiatrist, boss, parent, or partner or anyone else who can tell us what to do!

Un congrès pro-vie à Montréal : il faut réagir!

Une coalition de groupes et d’individus s’est formée il y a quelques semaines pour s’opposer à la tenue du « Congrès national pro-vie 2005 » qui se tiendra à l’Oratoire St-Joseph du 17 au 19 novembre (www.cqv.qc.ca/activite2.htm). Cet événement, qui rassemblera une brochette de personnalités politiques, médiatiques, universitaires et évidemment religieuses, remettra à l’avant-plan un discours anti-choix, anti-féministe et homophobe, dans un contexte de montée de la droite conservatrice.

Notre coalition lance un appel large à tout groupe, organisme ou regroupement qui refuse qu’une poignée d’idéologues réactionnaires dicte aux femmes leurs choix et tentent de contrôler notre corps, notre sexualité, notre identité sexuelle et notre santé.
